Project Better Energy Launches AI-Driven Platform to Slash Bills and Speed Up Renewable Adoption

Strategic partnership with Joulen to unlock household savings of over £1,100 per year, reduce emissions, and boost UK grid resilience.

Project Better Energy (PBE), the UK’s largest residential solar installer, today announced the launch of an AI-driven energy optimisation platform, created in partnership with energy technology company Joulen.

The £4.7m initiative will transform how homes and businesses generate, store, and use clean energy. By combining PBE’s nationwide solar expertise with Joulen’s advanced optimisation technology, the new platform will deliver average household savings of over £1,100 per year – in some cases reducing electricity bills to zero. Businesses are set to cut energy costs by up to 47%, with payback periods as short as one year.

Accessible via a simple, user-friendly app, the platform uses AI to analyse household usage, weather forecasts, and grid demand. Customers can sell surplus energy back to the grid, reducing reliance on imported gas and accelerating the UK’s transition to net zero.

Bringing affordable clean energy into every home

PBE research shows that while many households are motivated by financial savings, they often lack clear information on the long-term benefits of renewables. The new platform addresses that gap by reducing average payback times by three to four years in many instances, ensuring households quickly benefit from onsite clean energy.

The initial rollout will support 40,000 households, delivering a collective £120 million in savings by 2030. With solar, battery, and heat pump installations at record levels – 170,000 in the first half of 2025 alone – more than one million UK households could benefit from the platform by the end of the decade.

Unlocking fresh revenue streams for UK businesses

Businesses could cut energy bills by up to 47%, with average annual savings of £53,000 for a primary school and more than £54,000 for a manufacturing site.

The platform also opens new revenue opportunities by enabling organisations to sell surplus energy back to the grid at peak times. On average, businesses will cut emissions by 40%, supporting both sustainability targets and the UK’s net zero transition.

Business customers will also gain access to exclusive Npower tariffs, typically reserved for larger enterprises. This means lower costs, faster returns, new income opportunities, and stronger sustainability performance.

Simon Peat, CEO at Project Better Energy, said:

“Our partnership with Joulen empowers customers to take control of their energy use and outcomes. Their AI-driven approach aligns perfectly with our vision to provide smarter, more sustainable energy solutions at scale”.

“With the cost of living at the front of everyone’s minds, we hope the launch of our platform will pave the way towards a just and equitable energy transition – empowering households and business in every corner of the UK to play a role in the future energy system”.

Mr Micheal Evans, Project Better Energy Residential Customer said:

“I have been very pleasantly surprised by the production output of my solar panels in the first year, backed up the battery storage installation. This has resulted in being able to optimise energy savings now – and for the future.

It feels empowering to be involved in the technology and intelligence development of my installed solar energy system, as well as playing a modest and important role in the country’s net-zero obligations.”

Chris Doherty, Managing Director at Joulen, said:

“This partnership will introduce energy flexibility to a mass market, demonstrating how green technology in homes and on business sites, such as solar PV, batteries, and EVs, can significantly reduce bills, generate income, and support the grid’s transition to a clean electricity system. Together, we’ll empower homes and businesses to become beneficiaries and participants in the future electricity system, rather than bystanders.

“Our collaboration with Project Better Energy represents a strategic alignment between two forward-thinking organisations. We’re excited to continue working with the team to help customers unlock savings and new revenue streams. By promoting an inclusive journey to net zero, we’ll accelerate the UK’s energy transition.”

Accelerating the energy transition

Unlike large-scale renewable projects that can take up to a decade to connect, the platform enables households and small businesses to support the grid immediately.

By spreading energy generation and storage more widely, it strengthens resilience, balances supply and demand in real time, and ensures the benefits of clean energy are shared by households and businesses alike.
